There are many excellent law firms in Australia, and the geographical proximity to the Asia-Pacific region makes these firms some of the best in the world at negotiating business mergers and acquisitions in the region. The firm of Blake Davison seems to be the choice of Chinese investors, and their legal team recently advised PetroChina on a joint venture bid for Arrow.

There are six big firms in Australia that deal with business, and one of them is Allens Arthur Robinson, which was awarded the prestigious title of Australian Law Firm of the Year in 2010 by Who’s Who Legal Awards and also in 2010 were the Australian Deal Team of the Year in the Australian Legal Business Awards; they also scooped five other awards in the latter.

Freehill’s is an established Australian law firm which can trace its origins back to the 19th century when about 140 years ago one of its founding fathers, Bernard Freehill was admitted to practise law. This firm has won many awards, among the most recent Law Firm of the Year 2010 which it collected at the 12th Annual Insto Distinctions Awards. In 2009 it was also ranked first in the Best Lawyers International List and FinanceAsia awarded it the prestigious title of Best Financial Law Firm. It is an equal opportunities employer which has a “Women in Business” forum.

There are many other firms which qualify as some of the best in their fields, although not all operate throughout the continent of Australia. Some are based in Perth, Melbourne and Brisbane, or Sydney, so depending on the area a person lives there will be a very good firm of legal advisors close at hand.

Some of the leading family lawyers offer free seminars on family law, so that the person in the street can better understand how the law works; one of these firms is Harris Friedman in Sydney. Andersons Solicitors serve all of South Australia and has been established for more than 100 years. They pride themselves on their sensitivity and the sound advice that they offer families and individuals as well as businesses. As family lawyers they offer a free 30 minute interview for people with legal problems so that their situation can be assessed and the advice given during that session is free. Read more… »

Criminal defense attorneys are skilled professionals who have experience defending their clients against serious felony or misdemeanor criminal charges. The best criminal defense professionals have completed years of education in the law and criminal defense fields and they have hundreds of hours of real-world courtroom experience facing aggressive prosecutors.

When faced with a criminal complaint, the defendant must know how to find the best defense team available in order to increase their odds of an acquittal, favorable plea bargain or ‘not guilty’ verdict.

According to Oklahoma criminal defense lawyer Tommy Adler, his goal within the courtroom is always to present his client as more than just the charges facing him and to convince the judge and jury that his client deserves another chance at life.

Adler has represented clients in Oklahoma facing charges from simple misdemeanors to serious murder charges. He has a stunning success rate with as many as 95% of his client cases resulting in an acquittal or ‘not guilty’ verdict.

A quality criminal defense lawyer should be skilled at gathering and assimilating information regarding the case. They should be familiar with all witnesses, law enforcement, case reports and autopsy reports (if applicable). They should be familiar with the style and history of the prosecuting team in order to formulate a plan of how to best defend against the charges.

Criminal defense lawyers in each state should be familiar with every law regarding the felony or misdemeanor charges which their client is facing and with all possible punishments, fines, penalties and possible jail time their client may face.

To find the best criminal defense attorney, one must follow these guidelines:

1. Do your research – Criminal defense lawyers will have a record of success in the courtroom, with high rates of ‘not guilty’ verdicts, successful plea bargains or acquittals for their clients. All of this information is public record and should be available to you through your county clerk.

2. Know their history – If you are faced with a specific criminal charge such as drunk driving, domestic abuse, assault, homicide or any other charge, it is advised to find an attorney who specializes in your specific type of crime. This ensures that they will be the most familiar with the laws and penalties for these crimes and will know how best to defend against them in court in your state.

3. Find a free consultation – The best criminal defense lawyers will never ask for money upfront before providing you with a case evaluation. Quality law firms provide a free case evaluation before either party decides to embark on a legal agreement so that both parties involved can make a decision that the suggested partnership will benefit everyone involved.

4. Ask for references – By getting client and legal references for your defense team you are ensuring that you will have an attorney that will represent you in a responsible, professional and caring manner. The defense attorney becomes the “face” of your crime in court and you want to ensure that you have a consummate professional on your side. Read more… »

Attorneys often don’t have the luxury of traditional work schedules. Extra hours on nights and weekends may be necessary, but if work is not balanced with a satisfying personal life, lawyers can quickly become burned out and ineffective. Law practice management software helps attorneys work more efficiently at the office, which means a greater balance between their work and home lives.

Take Control With Law Firm Software

Attorneys use law practice management software to actively manage schedules. The applications allow users to schedule their time more effectively, but are more than simple electronic calendars. Individual staff member can coordinate their schedules with anyone else in the system so the firm acts as a team rather than a collection of individuals.

Law firm software acts as a central database of case information, so that relevant information can be quickly shared among all members of the team. This minimizes the amount of time any one person has to wait as files don’t have to be emailed or physically carried from person to person as a case develops. Each attorney can handle assigned tasks and then move on to the next job.

Schedule Everything

The classic excuse of the disorganized worker is, “I can’t find time to get organized.” Don’t find the time. Make the time. Law practice management software can help you create, and stick to, a schedule. And part of the plan should be regular assignments to revisit and modify your schedule as needed. Efficient workers know that any task not on the calendar often doesn’t get done.

In that same respect, attorneys should use law firm software to schedule personal time as well. This makes it harder to forget family commitments, and it motivates hard-working lawyers to take time for themselves so they can recharge and return to work focused and energized. It also keeps other people in the firm updated on a person’s availability so they can adjust their schedules accordingly.

Delegation Works…When Done Right

Delegating tasks to junior attorneys through law firm software is a great way to ease a senior attorney’s workload, and to free up experienced employees for more important, high value tasks. However, delegation can sometimes feel like more work than simply doing the task in the first place. Read more… »
